In the Men/Mixed fleet the Italian crew Simon Sivitz Kosuta/Jas Farneti cemented their dominance of the regatta with a second placing behind New Zealand's Gareth Moore/Ben Goodwin.

The waters were lumpy in the moderate to fresh north easterly breeze, and the sky was overcast with a constant threat of rain. First up for the day was a re-run of the previous days abandoned eleventh race, with only those who hadn't made the medal race taking part. Following this, the Women's medal race was sailed off the shores of Milford beach.

The 2012 470 World Championship was hosted by the Takapuna Boating Club and sailed on the Waitemata Harbour in New Zealand.

Simon Sivitz Kosuta/Jas Farneti (ITA). . photo OceanPhotography

470 Men/Mixed
Sivitz Kosuta/Farneti went into the medal race, having already won the World Championship title. They just wanted to have a good race, "we have no pressure on us, we will just race our own race, but we know the real competition is between the second and third position," they said. When asked how they'd found the regatta the Italian juniors responded enthusiastically, "Very good, we love it here and we were here four years ago at the 420 World Championship sailing together. So, we know some of the conditions."

"In the last three months we've trained a lot in Cagliari (Sardinia) with the Italian Olympic representatives, and we also sailed at the 470 Worlds in Perth just before this. We placed 36th and used it as training for this Championship."

In second place overall was New Zealand's James Turner/Finn Drummond who got together specifically for this regatta, and trained together for three weeks. "Our expectations were to do well, but after the Pre-Worlds we had work to do!" When asked what he attributed their good results to, Turner said, "we were more consistent that our rivals, all of our placings were good enough to keep." Of the Italian winners’ clear dominance of the regatta, Turner responded "they had a significant edge on everyone in every condition, they were also consistent rather than taking risks." Following this Champiosnip, Turner will partner back with his permanent crew, while Finn is looking at a multihull sailing path.

In third place were the French crew Sacha Pelisson/Nicholas Rossi who were more consistent than the Netherlands and top Australian crews who had also been in the running for a bronze medal placing.

Afrodite Kyranakou/Jeske Kisters (NED). photo OceanPhotography

470 Women
With ten women's crews competing in the world championship, qualification was never an issue however for Kyranakou/Kisters the goal was to keep a good distance between their next rivals from Germany, Great Britain and Japan to secure their gold medal. The recently formed team also wanted to sail a good race and have fun, "it's going to be windy, and we like that" they commented at the end of (attempted) racing on Thursday.

"We didn't know what the level of the fleet would be, or what the weather was like before the regatta but we are happy with how we are going. We started sailing in July 2011. We did the Youth Worlds in Medemblik after only two days of training, but now we are a team - this is what we focused on in our training up to this event," the pair concluded.

"It was worth coming to New Zealand for the variety of conditions, now we are going back to university and exams. We will evaluate our performance, our weaknesses and strengths." This was the final junior year for Kyranakou and the Netherlands team are pleased to get all the experience they could within this fleet before competing in the senior 2012 470 World Championship in Barcelona, Spain in May 2012.

Annika Bochmann/Elisabeth Panuschka won the medal race, but this wasn't enough to close up the points difference between themselves and the leaders, but did give them a six point margin over bronze medallists Anna Burnet/Flora Stewart of Great Britain who placed second in the medal race.

The 2012 470 Junior World Championship is now over, but the boat park was a hive of activity as many sailors prepared to take part in Sail Auckland which begins tomorrow at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club.

NEW ZEALAND’S JOSH JUNIOR TAKES THE TROPHY

photo eventmedia

3 February
Young New Zealand skipper Josh Junior has taken the 2012 Warren Jones International Youth Regatta, beating local Perth sailor David Gilmour 3 – 1 in a tense and hard fought final.

This self-effacing young man stepped ashore with a smile as wide as Cook Straight, heaping praise upon his crew, “that’s what you have a good crew for, to tell you what to do, I had Matty Stevens talking me through it all the way.”

Both Junior and Gilmour had come through the quarter-finals and semi-finals undefeated, and it was two days since David Gilmour had followed another boat across the finishing line.

However Josh Junior had been the rising star all through the event commenting, “towards the end we started to get it right,” and in the past he has been higher up the world rankings than his opponent.

The New Zealand crew had been clinical in their disposal of David Chapman and Jordan Reece in their quarter and semi-final encounters, so no one was under estimating their potential.

The Kiwis took the initial encounter, with Gilmour coming back to level the score, before Junior and his crew of James Sandell, Chris Jones, Matt Steven and Jono Clough took the next two and collected the trophy.

Other than the absence of sunshine, conditions for the final day were ideal, with a 15 knot southerly enough to penalize any boat handling errors, which kept the teams on their toes.

The Warren Jones International Youth Regatta is managed by Swan River Sailing, and hosted this year by Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

RESULTS:
Skipper Country
1. At Takapuna Boating Club the day began very quietly with no wind, no sun and a light drizzle of warm rain. Simon Sivitz Kosuita/Jas Farneti of Italy continued their winning ways, and the consistency of Afrodite Kyranakou/Jeske Kisters of the Netherlands kept the women's crew just clear of their rivals.

Racing conditions returned to the prevailing breeze of this regatta. The offshore south westerly, with it's shifty and patchy gusts, is hard to read and was described as "a crazy breeze" by at least one sailor who lost 10 boats when missing a shift. The wind was 15-18 knots.

470 Men/Mixed
Sivitz Kosuta/Farneti began the day with yet another win, but it was the Netherlands crew of Dirk Bennen/Rogier Weijers who claimed line honours in race 10. This brings Bennen/Weijers up into third place on the leader board after beginning the day on sixth, while the ever consistent local lads James Turner/Finn Drummond put in a solid performance with a second and fifth placing which tightened their grip on second position. Snakes and ladders in the challenging conditions is to be expected and today was no exception in the fleet - Magnus MasilgeMoritz Klingenberger have climbed from eighth to fifth, while young Greek sailors Alexandros and George Kavvas have dropped two places in the heavier breeze.

470 Women
A run of second places has put seven points between series leaders Netherland's Afrodite Kyranakou/Jeske Kisters and new combination Annika Bochmann/Elisabeth Panuschka. Conditions on the Waitemata Harbour were a photographer’s dream. Blue sky, sparkling water, white caps and a moderate sea breeze, along with a fleet of young sailors concentrated on close competition provided a wonderful scene today.

The 2012 470 Junior World Championship is being hosted by Takapuna Boating Club in Auckland, New Zealand,

470 Men/Mixed
Sivitz Kosuta/Farneti are now 22 points ahead of their nearest rivals, but James Turner/Finn Drummond of New Zealand are holding off the competition snapping at their heels from across the Tasman. Following a third in the first race of the day, Turner/Drummond hit a mark and had to do turns which lost them a few places in the second race. However they still have six points on the Crawford brothers of Australia.

“They [the Italians] are going really well, they’re not unbeatable, but very good,” commented Finn Drummond, who is keen on stealing a race or two from the lead team before the event is over. “I was quite rusty initially after a year out of the 470 but as this regatta has progressed we’ve got more consistent. James is putting the boat in good positions, we have good speed and it’s going well."

Matthew and Robert Crawford were coming into contact with objects in the water themselves... after racing the Australian team were discussing 'contact' between their centre board and a shark, following the incident several coaches witnessed the shark take a few flips in the air. The boys said the shark didn't help their speed today, but they were enjoying the lighter and more stable winds.

Another sibling team, Alexandros and George Kavvas of Greece also enjoyed the sailing today, and though they are used to a variety of conditions this was their favourite. The brothers are one of the younger crews in the fleet, at 15 and 16 years of age respectively, and as such they are also one of the lighter crews.

Having moved into the class only three months ago, after sailing in the International 420 Class, they feel they have better boat handling in the light which was demonstrated by a second and a fifth placing today. The Greek brothers came to the regatta to gain experience and have a goal of finishing in the top 12, and would be even more pleased if they made it into the top ten and were able to take part in the medal race on Friday.

470 Women
Consistency and two second place scores keeps the Netherlands crew, Afrodite Kyranakou/Jeske Kisters, five points ahead of rivals Annika Bochmann/Elisabeth Panuschka of Germany.

Bochmann/Panuschka finished the day on a high with a win which turned the tables with British crew Anna Burnet/Flora Stewart. Sailed on the Waitemata waters between the shore and Rangitoto Island, the harbour offered up a set of summer conditions.

The day began a little overcast, the cool south westerly which has dominated race days so far died out, so the race committee delayed racing until 1300 hrs when the expected north easterly sea breeze was to have filled in.

Sailors launched their boats in readiness for racing but proceedings were further delayed when the postponement flag was re-hoisted during the starting sequence as the wind changed direction significantly. A light six knot breeze finally settled and the waters were very flat, with lots of sunshine.

470 Men/Mixed
Race five got under way at 1400 hrs but a general recall caused the race committee to bring out the black flag and two boats including the Netherlands’ Dirk Bennen/Rogier Weijers, who had been in third place at the end of racing yesterday, had to withdraw from the race for being over the line within one minute of the start.

Sivitz Kosuta/Farneti have been impressive in the moderate to heavy conditions, having the speed to get the best shifts and handling their boat well, and today showed us that they are equally impressive in the light breeze, leading throughout the race and winning with a comfortable margin. In race six they placed first once again and are now a clear 15 points ahead of their next opponents.

During race five Sacha Pelisson/Nicholas Rossi of France challenged the Italians at times and made inroads into their lead on the final downwind leg by cutting in across the course, they looked very comfortable in the conditions and placed second in this race, with Magnus Masilge/Moritz Klingenberger of Germany not far behind.

Overnight in second place were New Zealand's top crew, James Turner/Finn Drummond, an 18th placing in the fifth race became their drop, but they made a comeback in race six with a fourth and retain their second position. Australia's Matthew and Robert Crawford have worked their way up the leader board into third, with a 10th and third placing today.

470 Women
“During race six the breeze gradually built and became 10 - 15 knots with the waves quickly building and most sailors found themselves in the wrong settings after the earlier lighter race, by the time we reached the beach it was even stronger,” reported Annika Bochman (GER), defending Junior World Champion

Afrodite Kyranakou/Jeske Kisters maintained their lead with second and first placings today - results which were also in the top ten of the mixed fleet. A good day for the British crew Anna Burnet/Flora Stewart who move into second overall, after a first and second scoreline, which has seen them swap positions with crew Annika Bochman/Elisabeth Panuschka just one point behind.
